Mobile App Development Strategy

Progress has exciting news to share that will improve your mobile/web app development cycles for years to come!  We’re merging our current OpenEdge/Rollbase Mobile offering with Progress Telerik Platform . The Telerik acquisition, completed in December 2014, has strengthened our ability to offer industry-leading mobile app development support. As a result, and as part of our strategic plan, we are announcing that as of September 2015 we will be moving to a single mobile app development platform to better address your mobile app development requirements. You’ll be able to build all of your mobile/web apps using a single framework and deliver a unique user experience for customers on desktops, tablets, or smartphone’s.

Telerik Platform is recognized by Gartner and others as a superior mobile solution and offers a more complete solution for you. As our single strategic mobile solution, it will receive all of our focus and dedicated resources. Some key features include the ability to:

  • Develop apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone with a single, reusable HTML5/JavaScript code base
  • Create hybrid or native mobile apps
  • Build simulation, debug and easily deploy your mobile apps
  • Use backend services such as Push Notification
  • Add Mobile app analytics with minimal code changes

Additional information on Telerik Platform is available, and additional getting-started materials will be posted separately. Telerik Kendo UI, a component of Telerik Platform that supplies jQuery-based UI widgets, is enhanced in May 2015 to support the JavaScript Data Object (JSDO) which is the mechanism used to connect to data in the OpenEdge and Rollbase backend.

Those with existing mobile apps developed using OpenEdge or Rollbase Mobile can continue running their mobile apps indefinitely if no changes are required and you are not using backend services such as Push Notification. If you need to make changes or you need to develop new mobile apps, you will need to move to Telerik Platform by September 2015 (May 2015 for new mobile apps developed for Rollbase). Please refer to the white paper on How to Migrate Rollbase and OpenEdge Mobile Apps to Telerik Platform.

We hope that you will agree that this is exciting news and that you will greatly benefit from the new capabilities and functionality Telerik Platform provides for all of your mobile app development requirements going forward.
