How to implement basic/form oerealm authentication

If I'm correct the basic&form variants of the oerealm.xml should be used to implement authentication which is done on the AppServer. This makes it perfectly suitable for existing applications. Can anybody point me to the documentation how to do this? I thought it is in the documentation somewhere but somehow I'm not able to find it.

I found following in 11.3 documentation which explains using Single Point of Authentication security configurations:
